Coquettes

The ‘jhoola table’ at Lavaash is their headquarter. They go to Bangkok to eat burgers at McDonald’s. ‘Mota dog’ and ‘patla dog’ are their favourite hashtags. They gossip about boys. They can’t do without seeing each other every day. They recently celebrated their one-year friendversary! Well, meet Kohli Saab and Radzie, popularly known as Chef Megha and Chef Radhika.

Our #BossLadies- Radhika Khandelwal of Fig & Maple/Ivy & Bean and Megha Kohli of Lavaash by Saby are breaking breads as well as the glass ceiling! Their PDA on Instagram will make any couple jealous. It is rather difficult to believe that both of them met a year ago at a chef’s table. And even more difficult to imagine what they did before that! Because now both of them are inseparable. From shopping to eating to travelling, there is nothing they don’t do together.

But one question which comes to everyone’s mind is how do they manage to be friends within such a competitive F&B industry? “It’s a total misconception that two female chefs can’t be friends. We have mutual admiration for each other’s work and celebrate each other’s achievements. Beyond that we love each other”, says Megha. Radhika adds, “Infact Megha saved me from a major embarrassment one time by pointing out the excess salt in a batch of cookies I was baking”.

Born and brought up in Delhi, Radhika moved to Canada in 2005 to pursue her higher education (English & Phycology) and subsequently to Australia. It’s in Melbourne that her love affair with food started. She learnt tricks of the trade will doing an apprenticeship at a restaurant during her student days (while she was training to be a hairstylist. no wonder her food aesthetics are always on point!). And she even managed to run a little business in Melbourne- a Deli.

Her return to India was a rather hasty decision. But her career choice had been made. She would later spend all her savings to open Ivy & Bean in Shahpur Jat in 2013 and subsequently Fig & Maple, Greater Kailash in 2017.

Moving onto a more pertinent question. The culinary business is no more a male stronghold. But was it easy for them to don the chef hat? “Ofcourse not. People think female chefs can just make for a pretty face and are there for social media amplification while somebody else is doing the cooking. Infact its most surprising to see male chefs think that way. They can be quite cocky too. But I give it off to them”, asserts Radhika. Both of them are sweetest to their staff during off service hours but can be quite the tough taskmasters otherwise. “Female chefs have to put double the effort for people to take them seriously especially so the male staff”, adds Megha.

Having a grown up in a typical Delhi Punjabi household with a lot of good food around, cooking was a natural progression for Megha. The dilemma was either to study English literature at the prestigious Jesus & Marry College or opt for the STEP programme at Oberoi’s post her schooling. Encouraged by her mother, she chose the latter and rest is history! She trained in several Oberoi kitchens for years before making the switch to Olive which was the turning point in her career.

Being mentored by Chef Sabyasachi Gorai was nothing less than a dream for Megha. She became one of the youngest Head Chef’s of the country at the age of 22 when she took charge of Olive Beach. Hence the move from Olive to Lavaash was only natural.

They finish off the conversation by adding that the industry isn’t as glamorous as it looks and spending endless hours in a cramped hot kitchen can be mentally and physically exhausting. But the two are happiest during busy kitchen hours. “It gives me a high when orders are flowing in. It’s an adrenaline rush!”, says Megha. Their passion has surely taken them places.

It was a bit of a somber mood this time around at Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2018. Call it the low turnout, missing big names or star power, the usual buzz was missing at AIFWAW18. Guess the only thing making our day brighter were the outfits from Abraham and Thakore.

We attended two days of the fashion extravaganza (gone are the days of attending all five days) and spent time watching shows, exploring the exhibition area, hobnobbing and ofcourse get photographed!

Matching the venue’s monochromatic aesthetics were our all Black and White outfits from Abraham & Thakore. While Amanda decided to go out of her comfort zone with this sari (doesn’t she carry it off with elan?) , I got back to basics with a kurta tunic and pants. We definitely had to give it a twist (see the belts)!

Here, check these out.

We were rather disappointed to see the regulars missing this time around at the Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2018. But we did a little scouting to bring the best from AIFWAW18.

Here is our pick of the top 5 designers from the recently concluded fashion extravaganza.

Pero

Now this is one show we always look forward to. And to our surprise, we were transported to a candy land! Moving away from her staple colours- indigo, black and white, designer Aneeth Arora chose a vibrant colour palette this time around. Pink and corals brightened a rather gloomy winter. Printed florals complemented the checks.

Siddartha Tytler

Taking inspiration from Japanese rockstar warriors, Siddartha Tytler put together a sports-luxe collection- ‘Fuss’. It was a blend of street style and high street. Jogger pants, bomber jackets and boyfriend suits embroidered with metal hardware stood out.

Shyamal Bhumika

Shyamal and Bhumika Shodhan paid a tribute to the mood that is- Paris. The intricately designed collection consisted of dainty lace and silk saris, cocktail dresses, lehengas and more. The designers played with velvet and organza fabrics.

Sahil Kochhar

Sahil Kochhar’s Autumn Winter 2018 collection ‘Chitr’ was high on craftsmanship. Dark colour palette was contrasted with striking florals in mustard, bright red, beige and olive. There was use of applique. Semi sheer shirts and cape jackets stole the show. You know we love you Sahil!

Abraham and Thakore

Abraham and Thakore’s collection #SadakSmart was inspired by the streets of Delhi. There was an abundance of the duo’s signature monochromatic pieces. Though brown, beige and navy blues broke the monotony. There were loose-fitted pants, saris, trench coats, jumpsuits and the humble gamchha. Being AT muses this season, we have to confess our bias towards the designers.

We had the pleasure of attending the recently concluded Delhi Times Fashion Week as guests of ORIENT ELECTRIC. And we must say it was quite a grand affair!

The brand known for its stylish, elegant and fashionable fans was a perfect partner to present designer Niki Mahajan’s collection- YUVRANI. Strutting down the ramp were models adorning royal ensembles with delicate embroidery inspired by Polki jewellery.

Today’s customer is fashion conscious not just with clothes but also with home décor. Hence, the fit with Orient Electric. That ‘Dream Home’ is just not about paint & furniture. Fixtures occupy an important place. And a stylishly designed premium fan adds dimension to the 5th wall. We mean there is so much drama one can create with fans. Lights, design, colour, shape, phew! Choosing a fan is a time consuming process, putting thought is very important.

Showcased at the event was the brand’s latest range of AEROSERIES fans designed to deliver astounding air delivery with minimal sound. Silent yet powerful we say! Orient Aerostorm’s unique winglet design minims noise while delivering maximum speed. When it comes to styling, the fan is a stunner with its premium high glass PU finish. Orient Aerolite comes with a decorative light.

For us, Orient Electric’s good looking & well performing fans were the real SHOWSTOPPERS! We highly recommend you check out the collection.

We feel location is paramount to just about everything else about any shoot you plan. Just like the clothes and the photography  location scouting is also as vital a factor to enhance a picture.

As fashion bloggers we have done a lot of shoots and are aware of how tedious the whole process is but this time around when we planned to shoot it in a car garage, I kid you not, it was a TASK.

From zero ventilation to grease all over our hands to posing with the vehicles with no source of light whatsoever barring a window – we really did push the envelope quite a bit to do justice to our theme this Winter, #Grease&Glam

Had it not been for H&M and Nishant’s photography, I don’t think we would have managed to pull this off!
